  • The employer shall assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present.
  • If hazards are present or likely to be present, the employer shall: select, and have each affected employee use, the types of PPE that will protect the affected employee from the hazards identified in the hazard assessment.
  • The employer shall verify that the required workplace hazard assessment has been performed through a written certification that identifies the workplace evaluated; the person certifying that the evaluation has been performed; the date(s) of the hazard assessment; and, which identifies the document as a certification of hazard assessment.

NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace

Paragraph 130.5 – from NFPA 70E 2015 Edition:

  • 130.5 Arc Flash Risk Assessment
    • An arc flash risk assessment shall be performed and shall:
      • Determine if an arc flash hazard exists. If an arc flash hazard exists, the risk assessment shall determine:
        • Appropriate safety-related work practices
        • The arc flash boundary
        • The PPE to be used within the arc flash boundary

Issues with NFPA PPE Lookup Tables:

Some people use Table 130.7(C)(15)(A)(b) Arc Flash Hazard PPE Categories for AC Systems.

The issue with the Lookup Table is that it specifies a maximum fault clearing time; therefore, the arcing fault current must be calculated and plotted on the device time current curve to see if the table is even applicable.
